Structure of Cub Scouts
The National Organization for Cub Scouts is the Boy Scouts of America.
The Occoneechee Council is made of a number of counties in the middle of the state.
The Three Rivers District encompasses Chatham, Lee, and part of Harnett County.
Our Charter Organization , or "sponsor" is First Baptist Church, Sanford.
Our pack is Pack 941. We are the only Cub Scout group that meets at First Baptist, but there is a companion Boy Scout Troop 941, which First Baptist also sponsors.
In a Cub Scout pack, each age/grade level has a "den" with an adult den leader and assistant den leader(s).
Tigers-first grade
Wolves-second grade
Bears-third grade
Webelos I-fourth grade
Webelos II-fifth grade (The Webelos rank is the only one that spans two years. "Webelos" is not an animal. It stands for "We'll be loyal Scouts.")
The Cubmaster is the overall leader for the pack and is assisted by as many assistant cubmasters as possible. All parents are members of the leadership team. There is also a Pack Committee, which is like an executive board. The Charter Organization Representative (COR) is the liaison between First Baptist and Pack 941.
What You Will Need to Have and to Do
Dues-$30.00 in the fall/$60.00 in February
The Cub Scout year runs from February to February. (No, I can't explain that one.) So, for those who join in the fall, we prorate dues so that you only pay for half a year. Then in February, you will pay for one whole year, but you won't pay in the fall again. Part of your dues goes to our Council, part to our national organization, and part stays in our pack. It includes insurance for your Scout during all Scouting activities.
Boy's Life
The Cub Scouts have their own magazine called Boy's Life which is published monthly. It includes articles of interest to Scouts including outdoor adventures, stories of outstanding Scouts, jokes, and informative articles. It is written on several levels to appeal across age groups.
Handbooks
Every Cub Scout needs a book for his rank (Tiger, Bear, etc.) These are available at the Scout Stores (more details about the store at the bottom of this page.)
Uniforms
Required parts-hat, shirt, belt, neckerchief, neckerchief slide for the appropriate rank
Tigers, Wolves, and Bears wear blue shirts. Webelos can wear blue or khaki.
Optional: Pack T-shirt which can be worn when the regular uniform might get too dirty.
Patches (for the uniform shirt--each book shows you where they go, or you can ask a leader.)
Number Patches-941 (We are Pack 941)--We will give you the numbers. See Tamara Lewis if you don't have yours in your Welcome Packet.
Den Number Strip-Tigers are Den 10, Wolves are Den 9, Bears are Den 8, Webelos I are Den 7 and Webelos II are Den 6.
Occoneechee Council Strip--tells what Council you are in World Crest Patch--shows that we are part of Scouting around the world
American Flag patch--You don’t have to buy this--it comes on the shirt
Each Scout is responsible for getting patches sewn on his uniform. Patch adhesives are available to glue on patches as well, but I have heard that they don't last through multiple washings, so be sure to check. If you would like to have your patches sewn on professionally you can do that.
Scout supplies are sold at Scout stores. You can access them over the Internet at www.scoutstuff.org. You can also go to a store in person, or call and have items shipped to you. Our local stores are:
Raleigh
Fayetteville
PARENTAL/ADULT HELPER PARTICIPATION
Tigers--must have an adult attend meetings with them every week
Wolves, Bears, Webelos--parents encouraged to stay for weekly meetings. Always need to hear announcements each week at 7:50 (end of den meetings)
All Cub Scouts--Last Tuesday of the month-activities for whole family including siblings (Pack Meetings)
Every family assists with one pack meeting during the year (organize food, games, speaker, or activity)
Each parent is asked to assist with at least one other pack event or activity (Pinewood Derby, trips, record keeping, leader, craft, popcorn sale, camping, games, ETC.) Everybody in the pack is a volunteer, so it is vital that each family find a way to share its time and talents in order to support the group.
One of the ways you can help is to complete the Parent and Family Talent Survey (available here in either .doc or .PDF format).
Parents and families can get awards for their participation. Check out the Pack Partner award form (available here in either .doc or .PDF format).
