Dear Cub Scout Parent,

Welcome to our Pack! Cub Scouting is not only a great activity for your son but also the whole family. We have a lot of fun activities and we use them to teach both skills and important values for the boys. There is an emphasis throughout Cub Scouts about how every person has an important role in his or her family, and there are activities that promote family "together time." Parents also appreciate how we reinforce the reasons behind what we do; concrete, close to home examples of responsibility, devotion, community, history, and respect.

Cub Scouting ranges from first to fifth grader, with each grade grouping in the proper rank and dens. These are: the Tiger Den (1st Grade), Wolf Den (2nd Grade), Bear Den (3rd Grade) and WEBELOS (4 &5 Grade). All dens meet at the same time at First Baptist Church (7:00 PM, Tuesday nights), with each den participating separately for den specific and age-appropriate activities. At around 7:50 PM all dens and parents meet together for the weeks announcements.

On the last Tuesday of the month we all meet together in the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall for a monthly celebration called a Pack meeting. I always encourage the whole family to come so they can witness the many awards and achievements that are handed out to the boys. This is an important time for them and to have the ones that love and encourage them there is very important! Plus, we always try to have a fun activity planned for the boys. Last year's meetings included a story teller, a Teacher Appreciation Banquet, and a Cub-strution building activity.

The thing I like about Cub Scouts is that the kids do so many different kinds of things. There are crafts, games, physical activities, outdoor activities, community activities, service projects, religious activities, trips, science activities, etc. etc. If you are like my family, it's hard to get "everything" done for the kids, and at Cub Scouts, they aren't just doing one thing, they are learning and having fun and stretching their experiences in many ways. We aim for one special activity each month, usually on a weekend. These are optional, but they are really great opportunities for the boys. This past year's offerings included three campouts, (with fishing, games, nature activities, crafts, flag ceremonies, and outdoor cooking), riding in the Sanford Christmas Parade, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, a Pinewood Derby car race, Lock-In Overnighter, Scout Sunday at First Baptist, a campfire, bowling, and a trip to the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in Charleston, where we spent two nights sleeping on the ship!

The rest of this section has information we think will be useful, but we know you'll have more questions. Just ask! All of us were new once, and we all want you and your Scout to feel welcome.

See you at Scouts!
